‘Lonestar Beatdown 2’ MMA Event Recap from College Station, TX

Okay Okay. Last blog about Beatdown 2. I promise. It’s just that it was SO MUCH DAMN FUN. Well…. except for the hours putting the cage up and taking it down. J/K. There is nothing better than doing some work with your closest friends for a good cause. We’re a family at ELITE. That’s how I feel anyway. So yeah, in light of Chris Reinig’s great work with the camera, I thought I’d post one last time with some behind the scenes footage from Mick Maynard & Elite Martial Arts’ Lonestar Beatdown 2. Stay tuned for the next event in College Station coming in September of 2007.

Mardi Gras 2007

The Bear

OKay so dinner Friday night at the Russian Bear was unexpected and a completely unnecesary good time. Any other night and we would have probably ended up at a Chili’s or soemthing, but we ended up at the Bear to try out some Eastern European. Things went awry when I tried ordering a dry martini. I get this response from a bearded man named Yuri in the this thick Baltic accent. “Marteeni? My friend… this is ROOSH-an Rust-O-Runt, we drink VODKA. No ice. No Coke. VODka. Must order bottle!” … so we end up ordering and finishing a large bottle of White Gold Russian Vokda (cost: $100+ per) by taking shot after shot in between our shish kabob, marinated cauliflower, and lamb shanks. The little Eastern European boy doing the flight-of-the-bumblebees Lord of the Dance number was entertaining. As was the lounge singer singing babooshka. Very sketchy. LOL.

On Saturday morning, we were up at the school by 9am to enjoy the Dragon Show that was put on by the Houston Shaolin Academy in celebration of Chinese New Year. Immediately following was the belt test @ Elite. A couple of people got upped, namely Lightweight and Ajay “Albert” Ellison. Good job guys. Here at a few pics from the test…

Mardi Gras

A few if ys took a spur-of-the-moment Mardi Gras trip out to Galveston a couple of hours after the test on Saturday night. We spent most of our time on the Strand at Yaya’s, dancing to a cover band and drinking beers. Good times. The real highlight of the night though occured on the way back to Houston when, while on a little pee break off the highway, we get accosted by Dickinson County’s Police Force’s most retarded officers. Dumb and Dumber, who were in an unmarked F-150 raided the gas station car wash that we used like the face of an R-Kelly one night stand. Officer Fat Farva and his Man-Partner of a woman detained us for a few minutes and gave Reinig shit for failing to identify before letting us go on our merry way. Good thing I was done draining the drunken lizard slightly earlier than the poor Mexican fellow who finished a minute after me and got caught red handed by the Pee-Police. He got arrested for disorderly conduct. Poor Guy… Anyways. Pics.

Sunday Fundae

Its a beautiful day out today so me & Reinig were going to do something outdoors like go to the driving range or go shopping at some resale shops in the Heights or midtown but we ended up going to La Strada instead to meet up with AJ and friends. Easy E and his homeboy met us out there for mimosas and bellinis. I ran into Allyson for a bit, as well as Raena & Abby on the way out. Crawfish @ 702 sounded nice but we got called back to the southside of town early so now I’m going to do some laundry and call it a day and proceed with this hangover I had this morning.

IFL & Superbowl 2007

Between IFC on Friday with the gang at reliant arena, UFC 67 on Saturday, the Superbowl tonight, and Eric P’s birthday all weekend, we sure were busy. I have a feeling monday morning will be pretty exhausting. I didn’t even drink tonight for the game because I didn’t get home from last night until roughly four this afternoon. After brunch at Fountainview Cafe, all I could think about was getting home to get some sleep in. I crawled out for a little bit to watch the game on HD, but only because I had $$$ on the game. Once I knew I lost, the weekend was over.

FRIDAY

The IFL at the Reliant on friday was a good time. Other than the Fast & the Furious race out of the parking lot after the event, the fight card was definately competitive and worthwhile, capped off by a dominating performance for the world’s top middleweight, Matt Lindland. Chris Hordecki and Bart Palaszewski put on the fight of the night in a 3-round slugfest.

SATURDAY

I spent the day watching movies and on the couch in Rice Village. GNZ, Chris W, and I had dinner at Gold Ribbon before making it out to ELITE to go watch the fights on the projector. Crocop & Rampage made good on their UFC debuts and it was off to the village for the majority of the gang! Hyper actually left early to head out to Venue but we did not have enough time to make the trek downtown so we headed to the Bronx to get shit-faced as usual. Ran into B-Rad, Israel, Shorty, B-Lab, and a few other peeps there in between taking shots of tequila. Anyways, I skipped House of Pies afterwards and instead headed to Eddie’s to session it up @ Hippie Haven before passing out and getting abused by whipped cream to the face. Anyways, pics below….

Spencer Scrivner’s Going Away Party

Who knew coming into this weekend that I would feel more tired on sunday night than most wednesday mornings? I certainly didn’t. I have no idea that the planned small get-together on friday would turn into a cigar-smokin’ beer-drinkin’ poker party that would keep my up until four am. Or that Saturday and Spencer’s Bon Voyage would end up with Hong dragging us to The Men’s Club to hang out in the little VIP area until three-thirty or so, not to make it home until close to five. (nice to see you btw, Ruthie. I run into you in the most random places!) By all accounts, I should have gone to Jay’s birthday party (happy birthday little man!) to play in the moonwalk and eat Jessica’s cookin’ but I was beat-tired and couldn’t do it anymore. That and I didn’t want to lose any more money to Eddie after I got owned for a twenty spot in skeeball at Dave & Buster’s the night before. Good seeing you Adrienne & Le as well. Congrats kids! Anyways, Sunday was a day on the couch. I did end up catching a movie in First Colony so it wasn’t a total dudder. Children of Men is an awesome flick! Trust me, by the end of this movie, which is chock full of social commentary if you catch it, you’ll end up wanting to impregnate something. So there it is… Hopefully I can get more than five hours of sleep tonight. Ratinho is in from Brazil for the next few so we’re going to be training hard for awhile! Yay! Anyways, here are some pics from Spencer’s Going Away. Elite loses a talented brown belt to Richmond, VA but more importantly, we’re going to miss a good friend!
